Amikacin, a semi-synthetic aminoglycoside antibiotic, has the IUPAC name O-[(2S,3R,4S,5R,6R)-3-amino-6-(aminomethyl)-4-hydroxy-2,5-dioxocyclohexane-1-carbonyl]amino]-D-glucosyl-(1โ†’6)-O-[(2S,3R,4S,5R,6R)-3-amino-6-(aminomethyl)-4-hydroxy-2,5-dioxocyclohexane-1-carbonyl]amino]-D-streptamine. Its molecular formula is C14H29N5O11, with a molecular weight of 435.4 g/mol. Structurally, it features a streptamine core linked to modified amino sugars, enhancing its activity against Gram-negative bacteria. Therapeutically, it treats severe infections caused by resistant pathogens. Amikacin is a white to off-white powder, soluble in water, with a pKa of ~6.5. It acts by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, inducing mRNA misreading and inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
