Amitriptyline, a tricyclic antidepressant (IUPAC: 10-(3-Dimethylamino-3-phenylpropyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydrocarbazole), has molecular formula C19H21N (molecular weight 263.37 g/mol). Its structure features a three-ring system with a central indane ring fused to benzene rings and a tertiary amine side chain. Therapeutically, it treats depression, neuropathic pain, and migraines. It is lipophilic, with low water solubility and a melting point of 60โ62ยฐC. Mechanistically, it inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake via blockade of SERT and NET, alongside anticholinergic and H1-antihistaminergic activity.
