Atenolol (IUPAC: 4-(2-methoxyethyl)amino-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,3,4-tetrazole) is a selective ฮฒ1-adrenergic receptor antagonist. Molecular formula: C14H22N2O3; molecular weight: 266.34 g/mol. Structurally, it features a methoxyethylamino side chain and a 4-hydroxyphenyl group. It belongs to the beta-blocker class, characterized by a tetrazole ring enhancing metabolic stability. Therapeutically used for hypertension, angina, and arrhythmias. Soluble in water (pKa ~9.5), with high plasma protein binding.
