Atorvastatin, IUPAC name (R)-7-[2-(4-fluorophenyl)-3-phenyl-4-(phenylcarbamoyl)-1-methyl-2-oxoethyl]-3,5-dihydroxy-6-(1-methylethyl)-8-(2-methylpropyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one, is a synthetic statin with molecular formula C33H34FN3O5S (molecular weight 603.69 g/mol). Structurally, it features a pyrrole-fused hydrogenated naphthalene core with a fluorobenzene substituent and a hydroxyl group. It inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis, via competitive binding. Therapeutically, it reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides while elevating HDL. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder, practically insoluble in water (pKa ~4.5-5.0), and soluble in organic solvents, facilitating hepatic uptake and metabolic activity.
