Bimatoprost, IUPAC name (1R,2S,3R)-3-[(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]amino-1,2-propanediol, is a synthetic prostaglandin F2ฮฑ analog with molecular formula C19H35NO5 (molecular weight 349.49 g/mol). Structurally, it features a cyclopentane ring with hydroxyl groups and an amide linkage. Therapeutically, it is used for glaucoma and hypotrichosis. It is a viscous, water-soluble compound with a pKa of ~4.5. Bimatoprost binds to FP prostaglandin receptors in ocular tissues, increasing uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor, thereby reducing intraocular pressure. Its stability and receptor specificity enhance efficacy in ophthalmic applications.
