Brimonidine, IUPAC name 2-(2-bromo-6-chlorobenzylidene)hydrazinecarbothioamide (C10H9BrClN3S, molecular weight 318.5 g/mol), is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist. Its structure features a substituted benzhydryl hydrazinecarbothioamide scaffold with bromine and chlorine substituents. Therapeutically, it reduces intraocular pressure in glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Physicochemically, it is a white to off-white solid with moderate water solubility and lipophilicity. Mechanistically, it activates alpha-2 receptors in ciliary epithelium, inhibiting aqueous humor secretion. Its selectivity for alpha-2 over alpha-1 receptors minimizes systemic vasoconstriction.
