Candesartan, IUPAC name (ยฑ)-1-[[2'-(2H-tetrazol-5-yl)[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl]methyl]-3-methyl-5-(1H-imidazol-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole, is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist (ARB) with molecular formula C24H29N5O and molecular weight 403.45 g/mol. It features a biphenyltetrazole core, imidazole, and triazole moieties. Therapeutically used for hypertension and heart failure, it exhibits low water solubility and high lipophilicity. Mechanistically, it competitively inhibits angiotensin II binding to AT1 receptors, reducing vasoconstriction and aldosterone secretion. Its stability and oral bioavailability stem from its rigid aromatic structure and hydrogen-bonding capacity.
