Carbamazepine (IUPAC name: 5H-dibenz[b,f]azepine-5-carboxamide) is a dibenzazepine derivative with molecular formula C15H12N2O and molecular weight 236.28 g/mol. It features a fused dibenzazepine ring system with an amide functional group. Therapeutically, it is used as an anticonvulsant for epilepsy and trigeminal neuralgia, and as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder. It is a white crystalline solid, slightly soluble in water (pKa ~10.6), with a melting point of 190โ192ยฐC. Its mechanism involves voltage-gated sodium channel blockade, reducing neuronal excitability by stabilizing cell membranes during repetitive firing.
