Cefixime, IUPAC name (6R,7R)-7-[(Z)-2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetyl]amino]-3-methyl-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid, is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Its molecular formula is C8H13N5O5S2 (molecular weight: 323.33 g/mol). Structurally, it features a beta-lactam ring fused to a dihydrothiazine ring, with a methoxyimino group and a thiazole moiety. Therapeutically, it treats bacterial infections such as otitis media, pharyngitis, and urinary tract infections. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder, sparingly soluble in water. Cefixime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking, and inducing osmotic lysis.
