Cefpodoxime, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is chemically named (6R,7R)-7-[(Z)-2-(2-amino-1,3-thiazol-4-yl)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-3-ethyl-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid. Its molecular formula is C14H14N6O5S, with a molecular weight of 378.3 g/mol. Structurally, it contains a beta-lactam ring fused to a dihydrothiazine ring, featuring a methoxyimino group and a thiazole side chain. It is a white to off-white crystalline powder, slightly water-soluble, with a pKa of ~3.5. Cefpodoxime inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), inducing cell lysis. It is therapeutically used for respiratory, urinary, and skin infections.
