Cefuroxime, a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, is chemically designated as (6R,7R)-7-[(2-furyl)acetyl]amino-3-(hydroxymethyl)-8-oxo-5-thia-1-azabicyclo[4.2.0]oct-2-ene-2-carboxylic acid. Its molecular formula is C16H15FN2O7S, with a molecular weight of 382.36 g/mol. Structurally, it features a beta-lactam ring fused to a thiazole ring, substituted with a furyl group. Therapeutically, it treats bacterial infections such as respiratory, skin, and urinary tract infections. Physicochemically, it is a white to off-white powder, soluble in water, with a pKa of ~2.8. It exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis via binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), leading to cell lysis.
