Clindamycin, a lincosamide antibiotic, is chemically (2R,3S,4R,5R,6S,8R,10R,12S,14S,16R,17R,19S,20S,21R,23R,24S,25S,27R)-2,3,4,5,6,8,10,12,14,16,17,19,20,21,23,24,25,27-octadecahydro-1,1,18,26-tetramethyl-11-oxo-7,22-dioxabicyclo[14.3.1]triaconta-1(28),29,31-trien-17-yl 2,6-dideoxy-3-C-methylamino-ฮฑ-L-mannopyranoside. Its molecular formula is C18H34N2O6S (molecular weight 406.54 g/mol). Structurally, it contains a 16-membered macrocyclic lactone ring and cladinose sugar. Therapeutically, it targets Gram-positive and anaerobic bacterial infections. It is a white, crystalline, slightly water-soluble compound with a pKa of ~7.5. Mechanistically, it binds the 50S ribosomal subunit, inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis by blocking translocation.
