Clopidogrel, (ยฑ)-2-(2-chlorophenyl)-2-(4-methylphenylsulfonyl)acetic acid methyl ester (C16H16ClNO2S, molecular weight 321.8 g/mol), is a thienopyridine derivative with a thienyl ring and sulfonyl group. It is a prodrug metabolized to an active thiol metabolite, irreversibly inhibiting platelet aggregation by binding to the P2Y12 ADP receptor. Therapeutically, it prevents arterial thrombosis in cardiovascular conditions. Clopidogrel is a white to off-white solid, slightly water-soluble, with a melting point of 120โ125ยฐC. Its mechanism involves ADP-mediated platelet activation blockade, reducing thrombus formation. It is a substrate for CYP2C19, affecting its efficacy in poor metabolizers.
