Dapagliflozin, IUPAC name 4-chloro-6-(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)pyrimidin-2-yl (hydroxy(methyl)phosphoryl)oxy, is a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor with molecular formula C11H15ClN5O4P and molecular weight 315.68 g/mol. It features a pyrimidine core linked to a phosphate ester and piperazine moiety, conferring hydrophilicity and metabolic stability. Therapeutically, it targets hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes by inhibiting renal glucose reabsorption. It is a white to off-white solid, soluble in water, with a pKa of ~6.5. Its mechanism involves competitive SGLT2 inhibition in proximal renal tubules, reducing glucose reabsorption and promoting urinary excretion.
