Deferasirox, IUPAC name 5-amino-1,2-dihydro-4-[(4-carboxyphenyl)amino]-1-(hydroxymethyl)-2-oxidanylidene-1ฮปโต-oxazolo[3,2-d]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid, is an oral iron chelator with molecular formula Cโ‚โ‚†Hโ‚โ‚Nโ‚ƒOโ‚‡ and molecular weight 357.28 g/mol. It belongs to the hydroxypyridone class, featuring a hydroxypyridone core conjugated with carboxylic acid and amino groups. Therapeutically, it treats chronic iron overload in transfusion-dependent anemias. It is a yellow, crystalline solid with moderate aqueous solubility (pKa ~4.5). Mechanism of action involves forming a 2:1 complex with ferric iron (Feยณโบ), enhancing urinary and fecal excretion of iron via biliary and renal pathways.
