Enalaprilat, the active metabolite of enalapril, is a synthetic angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. Its IUPAC name is (S)-1-[(2S,3aS,5aR,7S,8S,9R,10R,11R,12aR)-7-hydroxy-8-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-10,12-epoxy-2,3,3a,5a,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,12a-dodecahydro-1,4-dioxo-11-(2-propenyl)-1-naphthalenyl]propanol. Molecular formula C20H28N2O5, molecular weight 332.45 g/mol. Structurally, it features a tetrazole ring and a hydrophobic naphthalene moiety. Therapeutically used for hypertension and heart failure. It is a white, crystalline solid with moderate water solubility (pKa ~3.8). Mechanism involves reversible inhibition of ACE, blocking angiotensin II formation and reducing vasoconstriction.
