Flurbiprofen, IUPAC name 3-(2-fluoro-4-biphenylyl)propanoic acid (C15H12FNO2, 257.26 g/mol), is a propionic acid derivative nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Its structure comprises a biphenyl ring with a para-fluoro substituent and a propanoic acid chain, conferring lipophilicity and metabolic stability. Therapeutically employed for inflammation and pain, it exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic properties. A weak acid with low aqueous solubility and high lipid solubility, it melts at ~140-145ยฐC. Mechanistically, it inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, preferentially targeting COX-2, thereby suppressing prostaglandin synthesis.
