Gabapentin, IUPAC name 1-(aminomethyl)cyclohexaneacetic acid (C8H17NO2, molecular weight 171.22 g/mol), is a cyclohexane derivative structurally related to ฮณ-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It exhibits anticonvulsant, analgesic, and anxiolytic properties. Therapeutically, it is used for epilepsy, neuropathic pain, and adjunctive treatment of partial seizures. Gabapentin is a white, crystalline, water-soluble solid with a pKa of ~3.5. Its mechanism involves binding to the ฮฑ2ฮด subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels, modulating neuronal excitability and neurotransmitter release. It lacks direct GABAergic activity but influences calcium-dependent signaling pathways.
